The first Formula One Grand Prix held in Canada took place at a soggy Mosport Park on August 27, 1967. The race was held alternatively at Mount Tremblant, QC and Mosport for several years, then settled at the Ontario circuit until the final event there in 1977. The GP has since found a permanent home at Le Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, QC. To celebrate forty years (give or take) of Formula One racing in Canada, a reunion was held at Mosport on June 22-24, 2007. Hosted by the local vintage racing club, VARAC, the gathering saw eleven F1 cars in attendance, ten of which made it onto the track. In addition, a Wolf WR-1 (chassis #1) was displayed by the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame. The entry list:
A Penske PC-3, owned by Doug Mockett, was seen in the pits, but not on the track. Most cars were turning quick lap times, the fastest of the Saturday morning session a 1:16.527, by Hamish Somerville in a Williams FW07. This can be loosely compared to Mario Andretti's 1977 pole time of 1:11.385, set in a Lotus 78. It should be noted that the Mosport circuit has not seen any significant changes in the layout since then. Presented below is a slide show containing 142 images, showing the F1 cars, as well as other historic racing cars, including a Lola T70 Mk. IIIB Spyder, two BMW M1's, and Horst Kroll's 1986 Can-Am Frissbee. |
