The
American Le Mans Series
for sports prototypes and GT racers made their annual visit to Mosport
August 17-19, 2001. A larger field of LMP900 class prototypes was
present, with two entries each from the Le Mans winning Joest Audi
team, Cadillac, and Panoz, while the Champion Audi and Dyson Racing
teams each provided singleton entries. Panoz once again ran their
trusty old LMP1 roadsters, and Dyson elected to run the new Riley
& Scott Mk.IIIC, not seen since Sebring. The all time track
record was lowered by two tenths of a second on pole day, as Rinaldo
Capello put the #1 Joest Audi R8 in the top spot. A large crowd
was on hand to witness many of the front runners hit trouble in
the slick and changing conditions on race day, including Formula
1 refugee Johnny Herbert in the privately entered Champion Audi,
who pounded the turn two wall mightily while running down the eventual
winning works Audi R8 of Frank Biela and Emanuele Pirro.
Shot on Friday,
a practice only day, all photos, save three, are static paddock
shots, as my little digital cam simply wasn't up to the task of
high speed action. The photos are displayed here in a reduced quality
setting, to preserve dwindling webspace, and to enhance load times.
Enjoy 'em!
