For those not content with collecting diecast, slot car racing deserves some consideration. Following some lean years, slot car racing is experiencing a boom, not unlike that seen in the sixties. While various scales are popular, including 1:24, 1:32 and HO, this page will concentrate solely on 1:32 and "ready-to-run" cars, or RTR, as they are known. Home sets and accessories are readily available, but the real attraction is the cars. Gone are the plasticy, toy-like cars of yesteryear, replaced by highly detailed replicas, equally at home on the track or on the shelf. While many slot cars are quite valuable (until they hit the track, that is) and should, perhaps, best be left on display, your humble host figures that's what diecast is for, thus the slot cars in the Lugnuts garage are raced, and raced hard. No shelf queens here, baby!

Track and cars can essentially be split into two groups each. Various brands of plastic, sectional track are popular, or one can choose a routed, wooden track. As for cars, the hot debate is with or without magnets. Magnet cars offer higher speeds and superior grip, while the non magnet car is generally regarded as being more challenging to drive. The choices boil down to personal preference, with no "right" or "wrong" selections. For what it's worth, I've chosen to run without magnets on Scalextric Sport track.

As with the diecast, the slot car collection focuses entirely on racing cars, specifically Le Mans, Can-Am, and sports cars.
